Marin Firefighters Wear Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

IAFF Firefighters Breast Cancer Awareness 2011

All Marin Firefighters will wear "passionate pink" uniform t-shirts while on-duty October 17-23, 2011 to express the IAFF's support for breast cancer awareness.  Additionally, during October 2011, IAFF Local 1775 and many IAFF affiliates nationwide will display a pink logo and ribbon on our website, Twitter, Facebook, and other media impressions in express of our support for breast cancer research and treatment.

August 24, 2011 -- Over the past few years, many IAFF affiliates have participated in campaigns to raise awareness about breast cancer. The IAFF is pleased to announce an exciting new program to help affiliates in those efforts.

The IAFF and Susan G. Komen for the Cure invite IAFF affiliates to go "Passionately Pink for the Cure" in October to educate their communities about breast cancer and to raise funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the IAFF Charitable Foundation.

The Passionately Pink for the Cure campaign helps IAFF affiliates participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by providing tools and resources to use in their own communities and events. All donations collected online in connection with the IAFF Passionately Pink campaign will be shared equally by the IAFF Charitable Foundation and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

2011 Relay For Life

This year, Local 1775 members will relay for firefighters and their loved ones lost to cancer.  Our team will rally in support of one of our very own, a Firefighter from Marin County Fire Department and Local 1775 Executive Board Member who was diagnosed with occupational caused brain cancer in February 2011.  While his treatment is in progress and prognosis looks hopeful, we want to make sure that this year all of our brothers and sisters (each and every off-duty Marin firefighter!) comes out to join the Relay.

Marin Firefighters Raise $32,000 for MDA

Firefighters in Marin County do more than fight fires – during their time off, you may have seen them at locations across Marin “Filling their Boots” with donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. On May 1, more than 70 off-duty Marin firefighters raised $32,000 in donations from drivers at seven intersections from Novato to Sausalito.  The donations, collected from passing motorists, will be used to research and treat a range of neuromuscular diseases collectively known as Muscular Dystrophy.

Bay Area Brain Tumor Walk

Marin County Fire Department and the County of Marin Administrator's Office will participate in the 2011 Bay Area Brain Tumor Walk with the goal of improving the lives of those affected by brain tumors.  Inspired to walk in support of colleagues, friends and families whose lives have been directly impacted by this disease, Team Marin will walk in colleague Mike's memory and in support of colleague Jamie (Fire Engineer and Treasurer, L1775) and his family, who is currently fighting brain cancer.  No matter where you find yourself connected to this cause, being inspired by the people we care about is always a worthy battle.

Funds raised during these walks help direct promising research, support families who are currently coping with the effects of a brain tumor, and advocate for change.  Last year the walk raised $630,000 and organisers are hoping to be able to contribute to making an even bigger impact this year.
