A new Census Bureau report indicates that California's retirement funds helped pace a national rebound in pension fund returns. According to the new report, state and local pension funds in California grew at a 12.4% rate in 2010, surpassing the national average of 10.6%.

The "Fill the Boot" fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association raises more than $30,000 each year in Marin, when firefighters ask motorist to drop spare change in empty fire boots. 2012 will find find firefighters at East Blithedale in Mill Valley, 3rd and Grand in San Rafael, The Hub in San Anselmo, and Rowland at Vintage Oaks in Novato.
