The U.S. Senate has overwhelmingly approved legislation that will provide compensation for first responders who answered the call on September 11, 2001. The measure, which allocates $4.6 billion to pay medical expenses for those who suffered illnesses related to their 9/11 response, was passed after a compromise removed the threat of a GOP filibuster.

Last year was record-setting. The US Fire Administration reports the fewest on-duty deaths of firefighters since the agency started compiling statistics in 1977. There were 85 on-duty deaths in 2010, according to preliminary statistics.
